On Saturday, March 12, 2022, at about 8:00 PM, Santa Maria Police Department Communications center received word of a shooting that had occurred in the area of Fesler St. and N. Benwiley Ave.  The caller advised that he and his wife were in a car traveling in the area and had stopped at a stop sign when he heard a gunshot nearby.  The caller advised that his wife who was in the car with him had been hit by gunfire and they were traveling to the hospital for help. The thirty-two-year-old female and her unborn child were expected to survive and recover from the injury.
Officers immediately responded to initiate an investigation into the incident and located physical evidence associated with an exchange of gunfire between rival gangs.  One patrol officer indicated he had been in the area at the time but did not hear the shooting, saw an individual running away from the general location and followed him until he disappeared into a residence.  That officer did not believe he had cause to detain the individual running but noted his actions which were also captured on the patrol car’s video system.
Detectives assigned to the case followed up on the investigative leads and were able to determine Irvin Yair Gabino-Perez, 18 of Santa Maria was one of the parties involved in the exchange of gunfire.    On Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at about 5:00 PM, Gabino-Perez was taken into custody by detectives without incident.  Gabino-Perez was booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail for weapons related charges.
While this shooting has been determined to be gang related, the victim and her husband have no known gang affiliation, they were simply caught in the exchange of gunfire.  This investigation is ongoing, and we continue to ask anyone that may have information associated with this shooting and any of the other involved parties to contact Detective Sergeant Andy Magallon at (805) 928-3781 ext. 2164.

El sábado 12 de marzo de 2022, alrededor de las 8:00 p. m., el centro de comunicaciones del Departamento de Policía de Santa María recibió la noticia de un tiroteo que había ocurrido en el área de Fesler St. y N . Avenida Benwiley. La persona que llamó informó que él y su esposa viajaban en un automóvil en el área y se detuvieron en una señal de alto cuando escuchó un disparo cerca. La persona que llamó informó que su esposa, que estaba en el automóvil con él, había sido alcanzada por disparos y que viajaban al hospital en busca de ayuda. Se esperaba que la mujer de treinta y dos años y su hijo por nacer sobrevivieran y se recuperaran de la lesión.
Los oficiales respondieron de inmediato para iniciar una investigación sobre el incidente y localizaron evidencia física asociada con un intercambio de disparos entre bandas rivales. Un oficial de patrulla indicó que había estado en el área en ese momento, pero no escuchó los disparos, vio a un individuo que huía del lugar general y lo siguió hasta que desapareció en una residencia.Ese oficial no creía que tuviera motivos para detener al individuo que huía, pero anotó sus acciones, que también fueron capturadas en el sistema de video de la patrulla.
Los detectives asignados al caso dieron seguimiento a las pistas de investigación y pudieron determinar que Irvin Yair Gabino-Perez, de 18 años, de Santa María, era una de las partes involucradas en el intercambio de disparos. El martes 22 de marzo de 2022, alrededor de las 5:00 p. m., los detectives detuvieron a Gabino-Pérez sin incidentes. Gabino-Perez fue fichado en la Cárcel del Condado de Santa Bárbara por cargos relacionados con armas.
Si bien se ha determinado que este tiroteo está relacionado con pandillas, la víctima y su esposo no tienen afiliación conocida con pandillas, simplemente fueron atrapados en el intercambio de disparos.Esta investigación está en curso y seguimos pidiendo a cualquier persona que pueda tener información asociada con este tiroteo y cualquiera de las otras partes involucradas que se comunique con el sargento detective Andy Magallon al (805) 928-3781 ext. 2164 .
