Advisory

OIS Statement

The City of Racine has experienced a 49% increase in shots fired incidents and 6 gun homicides this year.

In an effort to curb the gun violence, Racine Police have been executing search warrants on identified vehicles and persons.

Today at about 1:03 this afternoon, a Racine Police Officer initiated a traffic stop in the area of 12th and Schiller Streets on one of those vehicles.

A man, armed with a handgun, fled from the car on foot followed closely by a Racine Police officer who gave the man numerous commands to stop and drop to the ground.

The foot pursuit went over a fence and up a small hill. The officer continually issued commands to stop.

The armed man refused all commands and took an action that resulted in the pursuing officer discharging his service weapon.

Responding officers converged on the scene, took life saving measures and secured the area and evidence.

The man did not survive the encounter.

I am not providing the name of the subject as I have not been advised that the next of kin has been notified.

The incident was captured on BWC and will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office.

The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation and the Wisconsin State Police are in Racine conducting the investigation. The Wisconsin State Crime lab is processing the scene.

Per department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
