County completes $660,000 in renovations to Cloverdale swimming pool
SANTA ROSA, CA – The Sonoma County Department of General Services will host a ceremony Friday to celebrate the completion of a $660,000 joint community project to renovate the aging swimming pool at the Veterans Memorial Building in Cloverdale.
The project, which began in 2018, included the installation of a solar thermal heating system that will allow the public to comfortably use the outdoor swimming pool in the spring and fall. Traditionally, the unheated pool has only opened over the summer. Renovation work included the demolition and replacement of the pool floor to install a new drain system and pump equipment. Workers also installed eight new metal tables and benches, replacing the rotted wood seating platforms.
The county led the project in partnership with the City of Cloverdale and the Cloverdale Unified School District. The county owns the pool, which is operated and managed by the City of Cloverdale through an annual agreement with the Sonoma County Family YMCA.
A ceremony to celebrate the completion of the project will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Cloverdale Veterans Memorial Building swimming pool, 205 W. First St., Cloverdale.
“This beloved community asset has provided much-needed relief from the summer heat and joy to generations in Cloverdale over the last 60 years,” said James Gore, chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. “I grew up in Cloverdale and learned to swim in this pool. I am filled with joy and excitement that this investment will ensure future generations receive the same benefit, especially now that we will be able to use the pool for swimming classes and recreation long after summer is over.”
The county provided $616,000 in funding for the renovation project, with the remainder supplied by the City of Cloverdale and the Cloverdale Unified School District.
The pool will open to the public at noon on Memorial Day (Monday, May 30). Day use fees are $5 for adults, $4 for youth and seniors 55 and older, and $10 for families with up to two adults and their minor children, all living in the same household. Financial assistance for swim lessons is available from the YMCA for families in need.
