More information on yesterday's accident

Additional information in regards to yesterday’s bicycle vs motor vehicle accident that occurred on Vandyke Avenue at Ramsey Avenue. Sadly, Amsterdam Police can now confirm that this accident claimed the life of 57 year-old Scott Madcharo of Amsterdam. The investigation reveals that Madcharo was operating a Ride 1UP electric assisted bicycle south on Ramsey Avenue. At the intersection of Ramsey Avenue and Vandyke Avenue he failed to stop at the posted stop sign and entered the roadway failing to yield the right of way to traffic on Vandyke Avenue. Upon entering the roadway he struck the rear driver’s side quarter panel of a vehicle that was legally travelling east on Vandyke Avenue.  The driver of that vehicle is identified as a 63 year-old Amsterdam woman. The driver remained on scene and called 911. The driver has been fully cooperative with this investigation.
Witness reports state that Madcharo was travelling south on Ramsey at a high rate of speed and beginning to lose control of his bicycle just before entering the intersection. Treatment of Madcharo began on scene by members of the Amsterdam Fire Department and he was transported to St. Mary’s hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The investigation is ongoing, but Amsterdam Police do not expect to file any charges in regards to this incident. The Amsterdam Police Department was assisted on the scene and with the investigation by members of the New York State Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
