Sheriff's Office responds to report of gunfire heard near school campus 
At approximately 11:54 today, November 17, 2022, the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of shots fired heard near the Hilton Head Island school complex.
The schools were placed on modified lockdown as a precaution while the Sheriff's Office investigated.
Sheriff's deputies determined that the gunfire originated from the Gumtree Road area and not at the school complex.
The lockdown has been lifted. Deputies will remain in the area of the school complex.
