Holiday Shopping Safety Tips
GUARD YOUR PURCHASES. Put shopping bags in your trunk or cover them up in your vehicle.
KEEP YOUR BELONGINGS SAFE. Don't leave wallets or purses on a counter or in a shopping cart.
PARK AND DRIVE SAFELY. Watch for cars driving diagonally. Be alert when backing out of spots.
SHOP WITH A SINGLE CREDIT CARD. If your card becomes lost or stolen, it's easier to have to cancel only one.
SHOP ON SECURE SITES. Be sure the URL begins with "https://" and sign out when done.
USE CREDIT CARDS. Credit cards offer added protection such as the right to dispute charges.
BE WARY OF EMAILS. Go directly to a retailer's website instead of clicking on an email link.
MONITOR YOUR ACCOUNTS. Check your credit card and bank statements online during the holidays.
AVOID USING PUBLIC WIFI. Public WiFi is often more vulnerable to hacking than other networks.
• Having your package shipped to a friend or relative who will be home.
• Having your package shipped to work, if allowed by your employer.
• Asking a neighbor to bring in your package until you arrive home.

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, the South River Police Department has a few reminders to help you protect yourself and help ensure your holiday season is enjoyable. Whether you plan on shopping in store or online, we encourage you to keep the following in mind.
