News Release: Daytime Sexual Assault Suspect Arrested

Working in close collaboration with officers from the University of California at Berkeley Police Department, police arrested the suspect in Sunday’s brazen daytime sexual assault at the California Avenue pedestrian underpass this afternoon in Berkeley.

On Sunday, April 9, 2023, at about 2:49 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call from a passerby reporting that he had discovered a woman in the California Avenue pedestrian underpass who said she had just been sexually assaulted there.  For details about the crime, read the news release we distributed that same evening.

Since then, officers and detectives have been actively working on the case.  The victim met with a sketch artist on April 10, and police released the suspect sketch to the community that afternoon.  Police also shared information about the crime with Bay Area law enforcement agency partners.

On the morning of April 11, detectives spoke with investigators from the University of California at Berkeley Police Department, who believed they had a possible suspect under observation.  At about 12:40 p.m., UCPD officers arrested that suspect on Memorial Glade on the University of California at Berkeley campus.  Palo Alto investigators responded to Berkeley, and after conducting additional follow-up investigation, placed the suspect under arrest for the Palo Alto sexual assault.

Police booked 34-year-old Daniel Widyanto Condronimpuno of Palm Beach, Florida, into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for several felony crimes (attempted rape by force, sexual penetration by force, assault with intent to commit rape, forcible sexual battery, false imprisonment, felony battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and robbery) and one misdemeanor crime (preventing someone from summoning help with a wireless communication device) as a result of the Palo Alto assault.

Police are temporarily withholding the release of the suspect’s booking photo, as other law enforcement agencies still have active investigations involving this same suspect and the premature release of his photo could hamper the investigation of their cases.  Once we receive confirmation that the release of his booking photo will not compromise other cases, we will distribute it.

Police would like to thank the many community members in Palo Alto and beyond who assisted our investigation by providing information in the aftermath of this assault and who shared information about the crime to help get the word out.  Police would also like to thank members of the media who covered this incident and helped to widely distribute the sketch of the suspect.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at (650) 329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to [email protected] or sent via text message or voice mail to (650) 383-8984.
