News Release: Police Arrest Four Juveniles in Crashed Stolen Car Following Pursuit

Police arrested four juveniles from Nevada early this morning following a pursuit after their stolen car collided with a patrol vehicle while trying to escape from a traffic stop.

On Thursday, July 13, 2023, at about 2:06 a.m., a patrol officer attempted to conduct a car stop on a silver 2017 Kia Rio sedan for a moving violation.  The vehicle pulled into the cul-de-sac near the intersection of Ross Road and Nathan Way and stopped.  As the officer was positioning the patrol car behind the vehicle, its driver immediately attempted to make a U-turn to escape, colliding with the front of the patrol car as it did so.

The officer pursued the suspect vehicle as it fled down Ross Road to East Meadow Drive and turned west.  The driver of the suspect vehicle attempted to make a right turn to head northbound on Alma Street but struck a signal pole and raised curb near the intersection.  That collision disabled the suspect vehicle and caused the airbags to deploy.  Police took the four occupants into custody without incident.  Two of them, the female driver and one of the three male passengers, were treated by personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department and taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.

The investigation revealed that all four occupants were juveniles who had run away from a group home in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 8.  The vehicle they were in had been reported stolen out of Nye County, Nevada.  The Kia sustained major damage as a result of the collision on Alma Street.  The patrol car that the Kia originally struck received minor damage to its front end.  No officers were injured.

Police arrested the 15-year-old female driver for felony assault with a deadly weapon (for driving into the occupied police car), felony evading, and felony possession of stolen property (for being in a stolen car).  Police arrested the three male passengers (two 13-year-olds and one 14-year-old) for felony possession of stolen property (for being in a stolen car).  Officers transported all four suspects to the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall.  In accordance with our standard release of information procedures, no additional information on the suspects is available since they are under the age of 18.
