News Release: Suspect Charged in Series of Residential Burglaries

Detectives obtained charges on a suspect last week for his participation in a series of residential burglaries that occurred between October of 2022 and May of 2023.  The suspect had since been arrested for an unrelated offense.

Between October of 2022 and May of 2023, a series of residential burglaries occurred in Palo Alto, many of which police believed to be associated.  For more information about this trend, read the news release we distributed about it on November 6, 2022.

Detectives actively investigated this series of burglaries and identified one of the suspects as 23-year-old Cesar Carmona of Santa Clara.  On July 20, detectives obtained a probable cause arrest warrant charging Carmona with five felony counts of residential burglary.

Detectives subsequently learned that, on July 20, Carmona had been arrested for unrelated charges by the Santa Clara Police Department and was in-custody.  On July 25, police served the arrest warrant on Carmona at the Santa Clara County Main Jail. The booking photo from his July 20 arrest appears above.

Through continued investigation and collaboration with the San Jose Police Department and Fremont Police Department, detectives connected Carmona to three additional incidents in San Jose, and one in Fremont.  As a result, on July 27, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office charged Carmona with seven counts of burglary, four counts of attempted burglary, and four counts of vandalism (all felonies).

Here is a list of the Palo Alto residential burglaries for which Carmona was charged:

  • October 22, 2022, 700 block Rosewood Drive.
  • October 28, 2022, 4200 block Briarwood Way.
  • February 16, 2023, 3600 block Ramona Street.
  • March 22, 2023, 700 block Talisman Court
  • May 2, 2023, 1400 Byron Street
The investigation into the identity of additional outstanding suspects in the Palo Alto burglaries is ongoing.  Police are also investigating the possibility that Carmona is responsible for additional burglaries.
