ARRAIGNMENT/BAIL STATUS: At this time Baret-Araujo is currently being held at Amsterdam Police headquarters where she will be arraigned in front of the Honorable Judge Lisa W. Lorman in Amsterdam City Court later this evening.
INCIDENT NARRATIVE: On Sunday August 6th at approximately 3:19 p.m. the Amsterdam Police Department received a 911 call that was transferred from Montgomery County Dispatch reporting a shooting that had just occurred at Veteran’s Park on Locust Avenue. Approximately 1 minute later APD patrol officers arrived on the scene and took the shooter into custody. The shooter now identified as 36 year-old Josefina J. Baret-Araujo surrendered to police and the handgun used in this incident was recovered from her custody. The victim is identified as a 38 year-old woman from Amsterdam. The victim was brought to St. Mary’s hospital in Amsterdam from the scene via private vehicle. Police responded to the hospital and spoke with the victim who was alert and was able to give details about the incident. The victim has since been transferred to Albany Medical Center for further treatment for what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
Amsterdam Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police. Amsterdam Police detectives responded and completed a canvass of the area that included interviewing witnesses as well as securing photographs that were taken by visitors to the park at the time of the shooting.
