Back to School Safety Tips

The South River Police Department would like to welcome you to back to school season. With the first day of school tomorrow, we would like to share a few reminders to help ensure a safe environment for motorists and pedestrians. Please take the time to review the following tips and share them with your children so we can all work together to have a safe school year. For more back to school tips, check out our back to school series on our social media pages.

In order to help ensure things run smoothly and safely, you will notice an increased police presence from us during the first few days of school at the beginning and end of the school day followed by our usual everyday presence during the rest of the school year.

REMINDERS FOR PARENTS:

• Where permitted, drop off and pick up children at dsignated curbside areas only. Never stop in traffic to do so.

• Pick up and drop off children in designated areas only.

• Arrive early, especially the first few days of school as these are usually extra hectic.

• Obey directions from crossing guards.

• Never pass a school bus with flashing lights. Remain stopped until the lights are off.

• Set the example for your children. Wake up late and you have to rush. Rushing leads to accidents. Allow yourself plenty of time in the morning.

• Maintain patience and cooperation with school staff during the drop off and pick up process.

• Obey the rules of the road.

• Always use child safety seats and seatbelts correctly.

SHARE THE FOLLOWING WITH YOUR CHILDREN:

• Cross only at crosswalks and street corners, never mid-block or between parked cars.

• Use public sidewalks and streets, avoid cutting through private property.

• Walk to and from school in a group with friends or other students.

• Obey traffic signals and directions from crossing guards.

• Don’t text or use your phone while walking.

The men and women of the South River Police Department wish all of our residents and children along with the staff of all South River schools a safe school year!
