Ghosts, goblins, and ghouls will soon be sharing the streets with superheroes and princesses. Halloween is almost here! It’s one of our favorite holidays, and we can’t wait for the spookiest night of the year on Tuesday, October 31st.
The Hollis Police Department wants to share with you our top tips for a safe and enjoyable evening:
Costumes:
Make sure costumes fit and are light or bright colored
Use reflective tape
Wear comfortable shoes
Toy weapons should be paper or cardboard
Put child’s last name and phone number inside costume
Walk Safely
Walk, don’t run
When crossing the street, STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN before crossing
Watch for cars backing out of driveways
Walk on sidewalks or paths
Check Candy:
Do not eat candy until checked for signs of tampering
Homemade treats should not be eaten unless absolutely sure they are safe
Eat treats only in original wrappers
Safety Around the House:
Turn on exterior lights to welcome trick-or-treaters
Do not light candles around walkways, use battery operated light sources
Keep walkways unobstructed and well lit
Do not let strangers into your home
Drivers:
Slow down and be alert in neighborhoods
Enter and exit driveways slowly and look all around you
Tips for Trick-or-Treaters
Map out route before leaving
Always Remember:
Stay with friends or parents
Go while it’s still light outside and after dark, carry a flashlight
Approach only houses with lights on
Carry a cell phone and call 911 if you suspect anything suspicious
