What is the Role of a Township Commissioner?

Since South Whitehall Township is a Township of the First Class, the governing body is made up of five (5) elected Commissioners with four (4) year overlapping terms. The members of the governing body may not be employees of the Township.

The Board of Commissioners plays the central role in local government by serving as the main legislative body.

South Whitehall Township is one of the many municipalities that employs a municipal administrator (“Township Manager”) who carries out the day-to-day administrative directives and policies as established by the main legislative governing body. In this form of government, the duties of the Board of Commissioners are generally and broadly summarized as follows:

  • Establishment of policies and procedures.

  • Ensuring that the services offered by the local government meet the needs of the community.

  • Directly influencing the future of the Township through strategic planning and decision-making.
