News Release: Police Investigate Assault and Carjacking

Police are investigating a case from early Saturday morning where a victim was knocked temporarily unconscious at his jobsite during a carjacking.  Police later recovered the stolen vehicle in Oakland.  The suspects are unknown and at large.

On Saturday, March 9, 2024, at about 5:51 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call reporting a carjacking that had occurred within the hour at a parking lot in the 700 block of Page Mill Road.

The investigation revealed that the victim, a man in his fifties, was working as a custodian and driving his own vehicle (a blue 2019 Toyota 4Runner).  He left his vehicle idling near a dumpster while he jumped out to empty garbage bags into the dumpster.  He noticed a light brown older-model sedan idling in a nearby parking space, with a person he described as a white female seated inside.

As the victim was returning to his car, he heard a male voice from behind him and then felt a blow to his shoulder from behind.  He fell to the ground and lost consciousness.  When he regained consciousness, both his vehicle and the brown sedan were gone.  He walked around the parking lot to see if he could find his vehicle, but he could not.  The victim notified police.  He did not report any additional injuries.  The victim did not see the male suspect and could not further describe either the woman or her sedan.  Police believe the man and woman were working in concert.

At about 9 a.m. that morning, an Oakland Police Department officer located the stolen vehicle in the 600 block of Embarcadero West in Oakland.  The vehicle was ablaze and unoccupied.  Detectives are actively investigating this case.  There have been no similar cases reported recently in Palo Alto.
