Press Release - Arrest, Attempted Murder

4. Reckless Endangerment 1st ( D- FELONY) - TWO COUNTS
ARRAIGNMENT/BAIL STATUS: Smith was arraigned in Amsterdam City Court in front of the Honorable Judge Lisa W. Lorman and remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility without bail.
INCIDENT NARRATIVE: On April 16th 2024 at approximately 11:00 am Amsterdam Police received a call reporting a shooting in the area of West Main Street and Bayard Street. Amsterdam patrol officers and detectives responded to the area as well as deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the New York State Police.
On their arrival police located witnesses who stated a male identified as, Travis Smith 49 of Amsterdam, had fired a handgun while standing on the front porch of a Bayard Street residence. Upon further investigation and after a canvass of the area it was determined from witnesses and video surveillance that Smith fired a handgun at another male who was on a nearby sidewalk following a dispute. It was determined that the bullet fired from Smith’s weapon had struck a nearby house on West Main Street. There were no injuries reported from the bullet that struck the home.
Smith fled the scene and area immediately following the incident while information was developed from the investigation revealed that he had relocated to Brooklyn, NY
On May 8th 2024 Smith was taken into custody by the United States Marshals fugitive taskforce in Brooklyn, NY. Smith was transported back to Amsterdam Police HQ where he was processed and arraigned in Amsterdam City Court on the above charges.
The Amsterdam Police Department was assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, U.S. Marshals Service and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
While there was probable cause for this arrest, all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
