Advisory

"Click it or Ticket" Awareness Campaign

Beginning May 20th and running through June 2nd, law enforcement agencies nationwide will be cracking down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national "Click it or Ticket" campaign. Although seat belt laws are enforced year round, this campaign is meant to draw additional attention to and raise awareness of the risks of not using seat belts.

The annual initiative includes high visibility law enforcement seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, as well as advertising and media outreach designed to ensure that drivers and passengers recognize the life-saving value of seat belts. As a result of these efforts, 2023 seat belt usage rates nationwide were at 91.9%, up from 91.6% in 2022.

In 2022, 11,302 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seat belts. Among the young adults (18 to 34) killed, 60% were unbuckled - one of the highest percentages for all age groups.

Using a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves while travelling. In 2017 alone, seat belts saved an estimated 15,000 lives nationwide.
