The Franklin Township Fire Prevention Department reminds residents that fireworks can be dangerous if not handled properly and recommends that residents attend a public fireworks display, such as the Township's fireworks display on July 3rd at the Municipal Complex. If any residents do decide to light fireworks, be sure to read and follow all directions carefully, use only fireworks that are legal in New Jersey, and follow basic safety guidelines.

Safety Guidelines:

• Only purchase New Jersey permitted Sparkling Devices and Novelties from reputable places. Don't buy if the packaging is damaged or appears tampered with.
• Follow the manufacturer's instructions
• Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers can reach temperatures of about 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit- and can cause severe bums.
• Do not use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
• Do not use fireworks in very windy or dry conditions.
• Keep a charged garden hose or bucket of water handy, in case of a fire or other mishap.
• Wear eye protection when lighting fireworks.
• Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly to a safe distance.
• Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
• Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
• Never point or throw fireworks (including sparklers) at any person, animal or building.
• After fireworks complete their burning, wait at least 20-minutes and then soak the devices with water. Follow any disposal directions on the fireworks you are using. Leave the device at least 5-feet from combustibles before discarding the device in the trash can receptacle the following morning.
