Potential for significant flooding this afternoon and evening
The North Brunswick Office of Emergency Management advises that the risk of flooding associated with thunderstorms this afternoon and evening is very high.
Starting in the mid-late afternoon, a boundary situated over the area will result in pop up scattered showers/storms. These will be slow moving downpours and once developed can sit over a given area leading to 2”+ of rain and instances of flooding.
This precedes the more widespread downpours / storms that develop towards sunset through the evening which can bring repeated rounds of torrential rain and potentially gusty winds. While most spots see at least an inch or two, a corridor of relentless downpours has potential to lead to 4-5”+ of rain. This would produce many flooded roads (that could necessitate water rescues), along with some flooding of streams and creeks.
As of right now this torrential rain is favored to set up overhead in Middlesex County or just north of the area.
Please be very careful if you are driving this afternoon and evening. If you come to a flooded road, play it safe and turn around.
In addition to the heavy rain and flooding threat, there is the potential for severe thunderstorms with damaging winds.
Activity decreases in coverage and tapers to lingering showers overnight.
