Controlled Dangerous Substance Arrest
Today, Chief Mark Tinitigan announced the arrest last week of a Borough man who was charged with Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance and Tampering with Evidence during the course of a motor vehicle stop.
On the evening of March 27th, P.O. Jonathan Torres observed a vehicle travel through a red light and conducted a motor vehicle stop for that traffic infraction. When attempting to stop the vehicle, P.O. Torres observed a small object thrown out of the passenger side window. During the course of the motor vehicle stop and through further investigation, the small object was located and observed to be a small plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance (suspected to be cocaine).
Ultimately, the passenger was identified to be 42 year-old Nelson Marques of South River. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with the above-mentioned criminal charges on a complaint-summons. He was also summoned for Littering. The driver of the vehicle was summoned for Failing to Obey a Traffic Control Device.
Additional Patrol Officers that aided in the investigation were Sgt. Hyslop, P.O. Swineford, and P.O. Rader.
Chief Tinitigan praised the Patrol Officers for their steadfast enforcement of traffic regulations while staying alert to possible criminal behavior. He noted the community can expect to see this agency’s officers continue to take initiative to address traffic safety and criminal activity concerns.
As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Nelson Marques are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
