Fairfield Police to Begin Enforcing CA Vehicle Code Update Starting July 5

AB 413, also known as the California Daylighting Bill, was signed on October 10, 2023, and added a new subdivision to California Vehicle Code (CVC) 22500.

CVC 22500(n) prohibits the stopping, standing, or parking of a vehicle:
- Within 20 feet of the vehicle approach side of any unmarked or marked crosswalk; or
- Within 15 feet of any crosswalk where a curb extension is present.

An unmarked crosswalk is defined as any path between street corners, or any path between a street corner and sidewalk only if there are curb ramps on both sides.

Twenty (20) feet will be measured from the curb return (the area where the curved curb begins to straighten out).

Effective January 1, 2025, vehicles who are in violation of this section can be issued a parking citation, which includes a fine. Fairfield Police Department will not begin enforcement of these fines until Saturday, 5 July 2025.

The goal of the update is to increase pedestrian safety and reduce the number of pedestrian versus vehicle crashes. Last year, Fairfield saw a record number of fatal pedestrian crashes within a span of just a few weeks, highlighting the need for increased traffic safety measures just like this one.
