Recovery Efforts Following July 13 Flood Event Community Update

Subject: Recovery Efforts Following July 13 Flood Event

As we continue recovering from the flood event that impacted our community on July 13, 2025, the City of Sonora remains committed to keeping our citizens informed about our ongoing response and recovery efforts.

While this flood was not as severe as the one experienced in 2018, it was a strong reminder of how quickly conditions can change. We are thankful to report that no serious injuries were sustained, and we appreciate the vigilance and cooperation shown by our residents.

Road Conditions

As of 8:00 p.m. today, Lowrey draw continues to flow with a strong current, and the low-water crossing remains closed. Barricades are in place for your safety. We urge all residents not to attempt to drive through this area or bypass warning signs, which is not only dangerous but also against the law.

Several other low-water crossings have dried and reopened, but Lowrey Draw remains unsafe for vehicular traffic at this time.

American Red Cross Support

Today, the American Red Cross set up at City Hall to assist flood-affected residents with cleaning supplies and other essential items. They were present from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and have now demobilized from Sonora.

However, supplies have been left behind at City Hall for anyone who still needs assistance. If you need items such as cleaning supplies, gloves, or masks, please contact City Hall at 325-387-2558 to check availability.

Debris Disposal

If you have flood-damaged household debris, please call City Hall to receive instructions on how and where to properly dispose of it. We have designated a collection point and will provide guidance upon your call.

 Damage Assessments
– We Need Your Help

It is critical that we document all flood-related property damage throughout the community to support our request for a state and federal disaster declaration. This declaration would help unlock additional resources for Sonora residents.

Beginning Friday, July 18 at 10:00 a.m., volunteers from the Concho Valley Council of Governments (COG) will be conducting in-person damage surveys throughout town. The assessments take about 15–20 minutes per home, and we strongly encourage all affected residents to participate.  City of Sonora Code Enforcement Officer Briggs Simms will be assisting survey volunteers.

Alternatively, you may also self-report your damage using the ISTAT form provided by the Texas Division of Emergency Management. This form will be included in the Nixle message and is available at City Hall. Please include photos of the damage and submit them to us. We can assist you with reporting this information to the state.

City Infrastructure Damage

At this time, we estimate that flood damage to city infrastructure, including the wastewater treatment plant, wastewater transmission lines, and water lines, totals approximately $94,000. This figure is expected to grow as we continue our full assessment of roadways and other impacted areas.
