Police Arrest Suspect in Vehicle Theft with Help from Alert Resident
HOLLISTER, CALIFORNIA – July 27, 2025-The Hollister Police Department has arrested a male suspect in connection with a stolen vehicle and the possession of burglary tools, thanks to the swift action of an observant community member.
In the early morning hours of July 27, 2025, at approximately 2:57 a.m., officers responded to the 400 block of Verona Place after a vigilant resident witnessed suspicious activity involving a parked vehicle. The resident observed a man breaking into the vehicle, which was then driven a short distance down the street. Recognizing the potential theft, the resident followed the suspect at a safe distance and promptly notified police.
Officers Provost and Officer Baugher arrived within minutes and located the suspect inside the vehicle, where he appeared to be feigning sleep. Officers contacted the suspect and quickly determined the vehicle had been recently stolen. Bags containing burglary tools were also located inside the car.
In addition, officers noticed a second vehicle parked directly in front of the stolen car. The car was registered out of Sunnyvale, California and Officers reached out to Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety to request contact with the registered owner of that car. Officers in Sunnyvale confirmed the car was an unreported stolen vehicle.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Joseph Moreno of San Jose, was taken into custody without incident. Further investigation led to the recovery of additional burglary tools believed to be associated with Moreno.
Moreno was transported to the San Benito County Jail and booked for charges that included, vehicle theft, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, possession of burglary tools and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The Hollister Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to the resident whose quick thinking and willingness to act made a significant difference in this case. Thanks to the involvement, officers were able to recover two stolen vehicles and take a suspect into custody.
“This incident highlights the power of partnership between the community and law enforcement,” said Hollister Police Chief Carlos Reynoso. “When residents stay alert and engaged, it strengthens our ability to respond quickly and keep our neighborhoods safe.”
The investigation is continuing and there appears to be others involved. Anyone with additional information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4330.
