Alert

Tsunami Advisory has been CANCELLED for all areas in Jefferson County.

Tsunami Advisory has been CANCELLED for all areas in Jefferson County. No further action is needed. This will be the final update.

THIRD UPDATE: The Tsunami Advisory remains in effect this morning as of 9AM. Strong or unusual currents may be possible. Please exercise caution.

Tide gauges along the coast continue to trend downward and a cancellation from the National Tsunami Warning Center is expected later today. Please continue to exercise caution until the Advisory is formally cancelled.

SECOND UPDATE: The Tsunami Advisory remains in effect and will likely remain so overnight. Strong currents are possible for 12 to 24 hours. Exercise caution along the water and in low lying areas until the Advisory is canceled.

The timing of the first waves/impacts remains the same.

Stay tuned to Nixle, KPTZ and KROH for updates. We will advise when the Advisory is cancelled and/or provide additional updates in the morning.

FIRST UPDATE: The Washington Coast is now under a Tsunami Advisory, meaning there may be strong currents and small waves of around 1 foot. Residents are advised to avoid coastal low lying areas during the Advisory.

This does mean that there is no longer a damaging tsunami threat and residents are not, barring significant changes, advised to evacuate.

The arrival time estimates remain the same, around 11:30PM for the West End, and 12:45AM for Port Townsend.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

An 8.7M earthquake occured in Russia around 4:30PM. As a result, the west coast of the United States is currently under a Tsunami WATCH, which means that a tsunami may be possible and residents should avoid low lying areas and be prepared to potentially evacuate if upgraded to a Warning.

Currently, the tsunami is scheduled to arrive to the West End of Jefferson County around 11:30PM; it is scheduled for arrival in Port Townsend and northeast Jefferson County around 12:45AM.

The Tsunami Watch is only applicable to the West End of Jefferson County and northeast Jefferson, including Discovery Bay, Port Townsend, and Port Hadlock.

Port Ludlow and south, including Quilcene and Brinnon, ARE NOT part of the Tsunami Watch.

Stay tuned to Nixle, KPTZ, and KROH for more information.

If upgraded to a Tsunami Warning, the Wireless Emergency Alert System and the AHAB Tsunami Alert Sirens will be activated.

Instructions:

No further action needed.
