Advisory

Ryders Lane Road Closure (East Brunswick)

The South River Police Department is sharing information from the East Brunswick Police Department regarding an upcoming road closure on Ryders Lane. Although the work below is taking place in East Brunswick, it will affect any South River residents traveling through the area.

Beginning Tuesday, September 30th at 7:00 AM, Conrail Railroad Corporation will begin a necessary project to repair and replace the rail line and crossing on Ryders Lane near the NJ Turnpike overpass. The work is expected to continue through Friday, October 3rd at 7:00 AM

What to Expect

Full Closure: All thru lanes on Ryders Lane will be closed during this time. Traffic will be detoured around the work zone until the project is completed. While the timeline may be shortened if work finishes early, please plan for alternate routes until Friday morning.

Southbound Detour: Traffic normally traveling south on Ryders Lane will be detoured via Washington Avenue (Milltown). Tices Lane (East Brunswick) will remain open. Trucks will be directed to use Tices Lane to Harts Lane to help reduce heavy truck traffic in Milltown.

Northbound Detour: Traffic normally traveling north on Ryders Lane will be detoured via Milltown Road, Harts Lane, and Main Street (Milltown).

Local Access: Local traffic will still be able to access homes, side streets, and businesses on Ryders Lane up to the work area. The closure will span the full width of the roadway, so no vehicles will be able to pass directly through the rail crossing site.

We recognize that Ryders Lane is a heavily traveled roadway, with thousands of vehicles passing through each day. Redirecting this traffic into East Brunswick and Milltown will unfortunately cause significant delays, particularly during peak travel times. We kindly ask that you adjust your daily schedules, allow extra travel time, and remain patient throughout this necessary project.

Safety and Enforcement

Your safety is our top priority. Officers will be present to monitor traffic flow, enforce safe driving practices, and address any aggressive or unsafe driving behaviors. We will also be monitoring local streets where drivers may attempt to bypass detours.

We understand this closure will create challenges and inconvenience, and we truly appreciate the cooperation and patience of our community. Together, we can get through this short disruption safely while important infrastructure work is completed.
