Main Street Roadwork Notice

On Monday, October 6th , a contractor working on behalf of Middlesex County will begin work to remove old trolley tracks under the pavement on Main Street (Middlesex County Route 535). The removal is necessary due to the track structure deteriorating and causing problems with the road surface. The project also includes sidewalk and ADA ramp construction as well as milling and paving.

Work will be taking place on weekdays between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM and is anticipated to last approximately 300 working days.

This is a long-term project that will significantly impact traffic on a heavily traveled road. We understand this will be challenging and cause inconvenience. To help ease this as much as possible, please review the following information about the project and how updates will be provided by the South River Police Department during the project.

Locations

Work will begin on Main Street near Hillside Avenue and gradually continue east on Main Street as the project progresses, ending on Main Street near Ferry Street at the conclusion of the project.

Road Closures

The nature of the work may make it difficult at times to anticipate which direction(s) of Main Street will be closed to traffic. Due to this, Main Street will be subject to closure and detours in either direction or in both directions during the hours work is taking place. Motorists should follow any posted detours and the directions of police officers.

Parking Restrictions

Street parking will not be permitted between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM where work is taking place. “No Parking” signs will be posted ahead of time. Overnight parking will be allowed.

Local Access

Dedicated police officers assigned to traffic posts during hours the work is taking place will be able to assist with access to residences and businesses within the work area.

Commercial Vehicles

Commercial trucks and tractor trailers will not be able to turn onto Main Street from Jackson Street during the first several months of the project. Truck traffic should follow any posted commercial vehicle detours and the directions of police officers.

Updates

Throughout the project, the South River Police Department will provide periodic updates via NIXLE, Facebook, and Instagram with the following information.

• Location and progress of the work
• Road closures and detours that are known in advance
• Any changes to the timeline of the project

Safety & Enforcement

The South River Police Department will actively monitor traffic and address any aggressive or unsafe driving behavior. Additionally, local streets will be monitored to ensure they are not being used by drivers to bypass any detours.

Instructions:

Motorists should anticipate traffic delays in the area and plan another route, if possible.
