Great Shakeout Drill at 10:16AM
Great Shakeout Drill at 10:16AM
The Great Shakeout, the world's largest annual earthquake drill, is in just one hour! Right now, over 1.6 million people are registered in the state of Washington and I'd like to encourage everyone to participate to the best of their ability:https://www.shakeout.org/washington/
Participating in the Great Shakeout is easy and should take no more than 30 seconds - at 10:16AM on Thursday, 10/16, an imaginary earthquake has hit the Pacific Northwest, and everyone should Drop (under a sturdy table, chair, or desk, to protect yourself from falling debris), Cover (the back of your head and neck, to further protect from potential injury), and Hold On (to the object you are taking cover under, to prevent it from shaking away from you). That's it!
This small drill will help build muscle memory if/when an actual earthquake strikes and will get everyone thinking more about what they would or should do.
Here at the Emergency Operations Center, we will be leveraging the Shakeout drill to hold a communications exercise, practicing emergency communications protocol with our organized disaster preparedness neighborhoods in NPREP.
At 10:16AM, the tsunami sirens in Port Townsend will be tested.

If you'd like to participate more, we'd encourage everyone to talk with your family about your personal disaster plan, or discuss with your colleagues about your roles and responsibilities within your department should disaster strike.
For those seeking more information about personal disaster preparedness, we recently updated our Think, Plan, Do preparedness guide, which can be found here: https://www.co.jefferson.wa.us/DocumentCenter/View/3277/Think-Plan-Do-2024?bidId=
