Police are investigating a vehicle collision involving a bicyclist that occurred October 4, 2025. The cyclist died from his injuries on October 15, 2025.
On Saturday October 4, 2025, at about 12:18 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call reporting a vehicle collision involving a bicyclist that had just occurred on the 3400 block of Foothill Expressway. Officers responded immediately, as did personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department. Paramedics transported the cyclist, a man in his eighties, to a local hospital, where he died Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the cyclist was traveling southbound on Foothill Expressway in the dedicated bicycle lane. While travelling in the bicycle lane, the cyclist entered into the lanes of southbound vehicular traffic and was struck by a 2022 Mercedes Benz sedan. The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bicycle and sustained a major head injury. The driver, who is in their nineties, remained on scene and was cooperative with police. At this time police do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were involved. Personnel from the Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team are continuing the investigation of the cause of the collision.
Police are not releasing the victim’s identity; that information can be obtained from the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner.
