DPW safety reminder: Drive carefully near refuse collection trucks. NEVER pass on the right!

Keep Our Refuse Collectors Safe – And Yourself Too!

Every day, City of Manchester refuse collectors work just inches from moving traffic to keep our neighborhoods clean and healthy. A moment of distraction behind the wheel can put their lives at risk—let’s do our part to keep them safe while they’re on the job.

Safety Reminders for Residents:

🚗 Drive Carefully: Slow down when approaching a refuse truck and provide 75 feet of space between you and the workers. Check for oncoming traffic, traffic signals and signage before passing a refuse collection truck.
🚫 NEVER pass a refuse truck on the right! On a two-way street, workers will be loading to the right of the truck. A little patience goes a long way. Together, we can make sure every worker gets home safely at the end of the day.
🗑️ Place Bins Properly: Position trash and recycling bins at the curb with enough space for workers to maneuver safely. Ensure lids are closed and bins are kept clear of snow and ice.
Stay Alert: Be mindful when walking near collection trucks and avoid crossing directly in front or behind them. Use extra caution early in the morning when visibility is low.
🐕 Secure Pets: Keep pets indoors or on a leash during collection times to prevent accidents.
👋 Show Respect: A friendly wave means a lot to our collectors—they’re part of the community too!

Remember: Safety is a shared responsibility. Protecting our refuse collectors means protecting the people who protect the cleanliness of our city. Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe and clean.
