Winter Storm Preparedness Update
The Emergency Operations Center is working closely with all community partners to prepare for the upcoming winter storm. Current forecasts indicate significant ice accumulation, which poses a serious threat for widespread power outages. Residents are encouraged to prepare now for the possibility of extended outages this weekend.
The Emergency Operations Center is currently finalizing plans for emergency shelters, which will open prior to the storm impacting the area. Please note that very cold temperatures are expected behind the storm, with single-digit temperatures anticipated Monday night. Stay tuned for additional updates and information.
Winter Storm Watch
In Effect: Saturday morning through Monday afternoon
What:
Heavy mixed precipitation is possible. Total sleet accumulations of up to two inches and ice accumulations between three-tenths and three-quarters of an inch are possible. Wind gusts could reach up to 30 mph across the mountains.
Where:
Northeast Georgia, Western North Carolina, and the South Carolina Upstate.
When:
From 7:00 AM EST Saturday through 1:00 PM EST Monday.
Impacts:
Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may result in widespread and prolonged power outages. Ice- and sleet-covered roadways may become treacherous or impassable. Hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning commute.
Additional Details:
The highest snow and sleet accumulations are expected north of I-40. The greatest ice accumulations are possible across the southern mountains of North Carolina, the mountains of northeast Georgia, and the mountains of South Carolina.
