Motor Vehicle Crash Involving Tanker Truck on I-40
McDowell County, NC — Emergency crews are currently on the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving a tanker truck on Interstate 40 westbound near mile marker 93 at the McDowell-Burke County line.
The tanker truck, which was hauling milk, overturned and spilled its contents into Muddy Creek. Emergency personnel from McDowell, Burke, and Catawba counties, along with the North Carolina Regional Hazmat Team from the Asheville Fire Department, are actively working to contain the spill.
The driver of the tanker truck was not injured in the incident.
At this time, one lane of I-40 westbound has reopened to traffic. Motorists should use caution when traveling through the area, as emergency crews are expected to remain on scene throughout the day.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) is also responding to assist with environmental impact mitigation.
