US Forest Service: Wildfire on Old Fort Mtn is 1 acre with 60% containment.
Old Fort Mountain Wildfire Update:
(From the US Forest Service)
Yesterday (April 1) afternoon US Forest Service, BLM, and local Fire Department crews responded to a lightning-caused wildfire along the Kitsuma Peak Trail, hiking in to quickly suppress the fire. Crews on the ground directed precision water drops from a helicopter, effectively stopping forward progress of the fire a couple hours after the first report of smoke. The fire is 1 acre in size and at 60% containment, and crews will continue checking lines and extinguishing hot spots today.
An aircraft will be up looking for additional new lightning-caused fires across the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests this morning and again this afternoon.
