George & Martha: A Cocktail Affair Brings History to Life at Hageman’s Tavern

Franklin Township is taking another meaningful step into America’s Semiquincentennial with a uniquely immersive celebration. On April 18, from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm, The Meadows Foundation and the Franklin 250 Committee will host “George & Martha: A Cocktail Affair,” an evening designed to bring visitors face‑to‑face with the nation’s first First Couple in a warm, engaging, and historically rich setting.

This special program invites guests to discover George and Martha Washington beyond the portraits and statues that dominate the national memory. Instead, attendees will meet them as they were at the dawn of the American Revolution: a dynamic, middle‑aged couple navigating the uncertainties of war, the responsibilities of leadership, and the enduring partnership that shaped both their private and public lives. The evening’s presentation delves into their 40‑year marriage, marked by deep respect, steadfast support, and the spirit that sustained Washington through the darkest winters of the encampments.

Adding to the immersive experience, the historic Hageman Barn will be transformed into “Hageman’s Tavern” for one night only. With a light colonial-inspired menu, signature cocktails, and an atmosphere reminiscent of an 18th-century gathering place, guests will enjoy a rare chance to mingle with the Washingtons in a space echoing the warmth and camaraderie of the Revolutionary era. The program also offers a modern reflection on 250 years of American history, highlighting the essential roles played by women, Black Americans, and Native Americans alongside the Founding Fathers.

A single $50 registration includes admission to the presentation, light colonial-style fare, and a tasting from the open signature bar featuring historic spirits. All proceeds support the ongoing preservation work of The Meadows Foundation. Attendees must be 21 or older to enjoy alcoholic beverages; non-alcoholic colonial refreshments will also be available.
