DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze: Plan for a Safe and Sober Ride on 4/20

Rohnert Park, California – With April 20 (4/20) approaching, the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety reminds everyone to celebrate responsibly and never drive under the influence of drugs. Although recreational and medicinal use of marijuana is legal in California, drug-impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk.

“Whether it is on 4/20 or any other day, it is unsafe and illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana,” Sergeant Keaney said. “If you plan to consume marijuana or any impairing substance, make a plan to get home safely with a sober ride home.”

Driving high has serious and deadly consequences. According to the Transportation Injury Mapping System, 573 people were killed in drug-related traffic crashes in 2023 in California. Drugs, including marijuana, can impair driving skills by slowing reaction time, reducing coordination, increasing aggressive and reckless behavior, impairing cognitive functions, and causing drowsiness. All these unsafe driving behaviors can lead to serious injuries or death in a crash.

Plan for a Safe Celebration
Before heading out for 4/20 festivities, follow these tips to stay safe:

  • Designate a Sober Driver: Choose someone ahead of time who won’t be drinking or using drugs to make sure everyone gets home safely.
  • Use Ridesharing Services, Taxis or Public Transportation: Rideshare apps and transit options are safe alternatives to driving if you've been drinking.
  • Look Out for Others: Don’t let friends or family members drive impaired. Take their keys and help arrange a safe ride.
If you see an impaired driver on the road, safely pull over and call 911.
