RPDPS Conducts Juvenile E-Scooter Safety Enforcement Following Rise in Injury Collisions
Rohnert Park, CA - Recently, the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety conducted a juvenile e-scooter enforcement operation throughout the city. The California Vehicle Code requires juveniles to have a learner’s permit or driver’s license to operate an e-scooter and to wear a helmet.
Over the past year, Rohnert Park DPS conducted an educational campaign to provide information regarding the importance of following the California Vehicle Code for the safety of the rider and motorists on the roadway. Educational flyers were provided to students at Lawrence Jones Middle School, and warnings were issued in conjunction with a diversion program allowing essays to be completed and reviewed by the Chief in lieu of fines. Unfortunately, the City has continued to see increased collisions involving e-scooters, resulting in injuries to the rider.
During the recent enforcement operation on May 5, 2026, 27 juveniles were issued citations for riding e-scooters while underage or otherwise in violation of the California Vehicle Code. Four juveniles were issued citations for riding bicycles or e-bikes in violation of the California Vehicle Code, and seven additional citations were issued for other traffic violations throughout the city.
The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety wishes to remind everyone of the rules of the roadway involving e-scooters and the dangers they present when riding them unlawfully. Thank you for helping to keep our community safe.
