The Town of Peterborough wishes to inform downtown residents and businesses that Grove St., at the Grove Street Bridge, will be closed to through traffic beginning on or around June 22, 2026, to allow for the refurbishment of the Grove Street Bridge. The anticipated start date is weather dependent and contingent upon the contractor completing work on the Elm St. Bridge as scheduled. At this time, the Elm Street Bridge project is progressing on time and on budget.

During the approximately eight-week construction period, motorists and pedestrians will not have access to the Grove St. Bridge or its sidewalks for travel between Grove St. and the immediate downtown area.

Alternative routes will remain available throughout construction. The Main Street Bridge, Elm St. Bridge, Summer St., High St., and Union St. will continue to provide viable detour options for both motorists and pedestrians traveling to and from downtown.

To help minimize confusion and maintain access to downtown businesses, detour signage for traffic approaching from the Route 101 corridor will be installed prior to the road closure. Additional project and traffic control signage may be placed as needed to help direct motorists and pedestrians through the area during construction.

This project is necessary due to the deterioration of the bridge and the need to address these conditions before they worsen and result in more extensive repairs and higher costs. The refurbishment effort has been several years in the planning and development stages and is being funded through the Greater Downtown Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this important infrastructure improvement project and encourage residents, visitors, and businesses to plan accordingly during the construction period.
