Excessive Heat Continues in Beaufort County; Public Encouraged to Visit County Cooling Locations

Hot and humid conditions continue across our area, with dangerous heat expected to persist through the weekend.

As of this morning, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Beaufort County. Record-breaking temperatures are expected, with heat index values reaching up to 110 degrees.

To help residents and visitors stay safe during the extreme heat, anyone who needs relief from the heat is encouraged to visit one of the county's designated cooling locations during regular business hours.

Cooling locations include:

Recreation Centers

  • Burton Wells Recreation Center: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Buckwalter Recreation Center: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Beaufort County Library Branches
  • Beaufort Branch Library: Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Bluffton Branch Library: Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Hilton Head Branch Library: Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Lobeco Branch Library: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Port Royal Branch Library: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • St. Helena Branch Library: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
These facilities are open during their normal operating hours and are intended to provide temporary relief from the heat. Overnight stays are not permitted.

Visitors are reminded that weapons, alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking and pets are prohibited inside these facilities. Service animals are permitted. Guests are asked to follow all facility rules and staff instructions.

Residents are also encouraged to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses:
  • Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Check on older adults, young children and neighbors who may be vulnerable to extreme heat.
  • Never leave children, older adults or pets inside a parked vehicle, even for a short period.
