1 DUI Arrest & 12 Cited - Labor Day Weekend Checkpoint

On Friday 9/4, Novato Police held a DUI checkpoint on DeLong Ave at Redwood Blvd in Novato. The enforcement efforts were part of a national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization campaign, where officers on patrol throughout the country take suspected impaired drivers off the road.

  • 1196 vehicles entered checkpoint.
  • 1 DUI Arrest: driver cited and released for DUI – under the influence of marijuana.
  • 12 Citations:
    • 10 drivers cited for unlicensed driving
    • 1 driver cited and released for driving on suspended license. The driver’s license was suspended for a previous DUI violation/arrest.
    • 1 minor cited for possession of marijuana.
Most Californians consider drunk driving as one of their biggest traffic safety concerns, with drunk driving crashes accounting for 34% of all traffic deaths in the state in 2024. This equates to about four people killed every day. First-time charges for DUI in California are an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, which could include a suspended license.

Novato Police reminds the public that impaired driving could be caused by more than just alcohol. The use of cannabis products, illicit drugs, even prescription and over-the-counter medications, can lead to impairment.
