McDowell County Storm Update: EOC & Shelter Closed
After a long night of heavy rainfall and flooding across McDowell County, our Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will close at 9:00 AM today. The emergency shelter has also closed.
While conditions have improved this morning and streams are returning to their banks, our emergency responders had a busy night.
Overnight impacts and response included:
-
Widespread localized flooding throughout the county, including flooded roads, overwhelmed culverts, and streams overflowing their banks.
-
Five landslides concentrated along the NC 226 North corridor in the Woodlawn community.
-
A structure fire.
-
Voluntary evacuations in isolated areas of the county.
Despite a challenging night, we are thankful to report no known injuries or loss of life. We call that a success!
We want to sincerely thank all of our emergency response partners who worked tirelessly throughout the night to keep our residents safe. From our 911 telecommunicators coordinating resources behind the scenes to our responders in the field, public works crews, shelter personnel, and supporting agencies, this was truly a team effort.
Although the EOC is closing, emergency services will continue to monitor conditions and coordinate any outstanding needs through normal operations.
Please continue to use caution around damaged roads and areas impacted by flooding or landslides.
To everyone who answered the call last night, thank you for your dedication to McDowell County!
