Aztec lift station and the wastewater plant will likely leak raw sewage into the Animas River due to flooding and emergency repairs.
The City of Aztec Wastewater Plant has been taking on excessive water due to catastrophic flooding. Around 11:00 PM, October 23, 2026 the wastewater plant was near full capacity when a pipe began to leak. To fix the leak, the lift station in Hartman Park will have to be shut down. This may cause raw sewage to spill into a ditch that empties into the Animas River. This pump station was already in distress due to the flood waters breaching the building. Septic trucks are enroute to the Wastewater plant in an effort to try and avoid a sewage spill. Unfortunately, due to the other cities in the area suffering from the same catastrophic flooding, there is no place to empty the trucks once they are full. It is inevitable that the lift station and the wastewater plant will leak raw sewage into the Animas River. Notifications are being made to the governmentall agencies as well as down stream users of the Animas River Water.
