Just after 10 p.m., Friday, August 20, 2021, Sheriff's Office deputies, Burton Fire District personnel and Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedics responded to a report of a home invasion, shooting and arson on Milledge Village Road in Burton. 

Deputies arrived and secured the scene for fire personnel and EMS to address the house fire and treat an injured woman and man: the woman sustained a gunshot wound; the man had symptoms of smoke inhalation.

The two were transported to the Beaufort Memorial Hospital and treated for their injuries, while deputies conducted interviews.

Deputies learned that the woman and man were inside their Milledge Village home when they heard a knock at the door. 

Following the knock, unknown subjects kicked the door open and fired several gunshots, one striking the woman. 

After firing the shots, the subjects poured combustible liquid inside the home.

After pouring the liquid, the subjects lit the home on fire. Fortunately, the injured woman and man were able to escape through a window.

There were believed to be two subjects involved in the incident. One of the subjects was described as an African-American male, thin build, wearing a mask; the other was described as a male. 

As of the time of this advisory, the woman had been treated for the gunshot wound and released; the man remains hospitalized for observations.
