SCPD 2nd Precinct and Huntington School District organized a bicycle safety class for the students at the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School
On Wednesday, February 24th and Thursday, February 25th, 2016, staff members from the Huntington School District and the Suffolk County Police Department organized a bicycle safety class for the students at the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School. School Resource Officer Drew Fiorillo and Community Liaison Officer Claudia Delgado explained the nomenclature of a bicycle, how to properly fit and wear a bicycle helmet, how to properly mount/dismount a bicycle and the rules of the road. Principal Rae Montesano embraced the idea and supported Physical Education teachers John Walsh and Beth Vogelsang as they created a course which included stop signs, traffic lights, turn lanes and a traffic court. The students rode scooters through the course while applying the rules of the road that they had learned. When students violated the rules of the road they were directed into the traffic court location. Once there, they were asked to complete 5-10 jumping jacks, pushups or sit-ups as a penalty for their violation of the rules of the road.
Special thanks to Angela Brockmann from the Education and Assistance Corporation (EAC Network) who donated bicycle helmets which were raffled off to the students.
Thanks also to Security Officer Glenn DeVeau who as usual is always there to assist in all aspects of an event.
