Our algae bloom has been tentatively identified as anabaena. This is a cyanobacteria (aka blue-green algae) that is present in some nearby lakes and ponds. Several species of anabaena are know to produce toxins which can cause serious illness, especially for children and pets (who may ingest small quantities of water.) We are still awaiting tests to determine the presence of toxins, but due to the type of "algae" we may need to seek special testing next week. Anabaena is known to produce different types of toxins, and some are more difficult to test.
