On July 21, 2026, investigators from the California Department of Justice's California Police Shooting Investigation Team (CaPSIT) responded to the 2500 block of Dusan Street to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving members of the Simi Valley Police Department. CaPSIT formally notified the Simi Valley Police Department that it would assume primary responsibility for the investigation pursuant to Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), codified in California Government Code section 12525.3.

Assembly Bill 1506 requires the California Department of Justice to investigate officer-involved shootings that result in the death of an unarmed civilian, defined by the statute as a person who is not in possession of a deadly weapon. Prior to the enactment of AB 1506, investigations of these critical incidents were typically conducted by the involved local law enforcement agency in conjunction with the Ventura County District Attorney's Office. Upon completion of its investigation, CaPSIT will submit the case to the California Department of Justice Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for an independent review and prosecutorial determination.

Following the July 21 officer-involved shooting, the Simi Valley Police Department promptly notified the California Police Shooting Investigation Team (CaPSIT), as required by law. The incident involved multiple officers who discharged their firearms at a suspect wanted for felony domestic violence (Penal Code § 273.5(a)) and felony elder abuse (Penal Code § 368(a)) following a 911 call for service earlier that morning. After officers attempted to stop the suspect, he fled in a vehicle, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit in violation of Vehicle Code § 2800.1(a).

During the pursuit, the suspect briefly stopped in front of the residence where the earlier domestic violence incident had occurred before fleeing again. One Simi Valley Police officer removed himself from the pursuit to remain at the residence to protect the family members who were sheltering inside. As the pursuit continued, the suspect repeatedly drove past the residence. During his final pass immediately before the officer-involved shooting, the suspect drove his vehicle toward the officer who was positioned in front of the residence before colliding with a Simi Valley Police motorcycle. The Simi Valley Police Department is fully cooperating with CaPSIT and is providing all available information, evidence, and resources necessary to support a thorough, objective, and independent investigation.
 
The Simi Valley Police Department supports the independent review process established by AB 1506 and believes it promotes transparency, accountability, and public confidence in officer-involved shooting investigations.

At the appropriate time, the Simi Valley Police Department will release a Critical Incident Community Briefing video to provide additional information regarding the incident.
